How Bluenose Started —
and Why We're Still
a Small Team

Bluenose started in 2019 with two technicians, a van, and a frustration that's probably familiar if you've ever tried to get an appliance fixed in this city. You'd call a company, wait four days for someone to show up, and then find out the guy they sent had never actually worked on your brand before. The quote would change. The part would take another week. You'd end up buying a new fridge anyway.

We weren't trying to build a company. We just knew how to fix things properly and thought that should be enough.

The first year was mostly word of mouth in the North End and Fairview. People would call, we'd show up the next morning, fix the problem on the first visit when we could, and leave. No upselling, no inflated labour hours, no vague explanations. Apparently that was unusual enough that people told their neighbours.

By 2021 we'd added three more technicians and started covering Dartmouth full-time. That came partly from demand and partly because half our team lives over the bridge anyway. We know those streets. We know which buildings have older Maytag units in the laundry rooms, which neighbourhoods have a lot of LG French-door fridges with the ice maker problem everyone's heard about.

We're still not a big operation. We're not trying to be. The team is tight, the communication is direct, and when something goes wrong after a repair — which happens occasionally, because appliances are complicated — you call the same number and get the same people. No ticket system. No "your call is important to us."

The 90-day warranty on parts and labour isn't a selling point we invented. It came from a conversation early on where someone asked what happens if the repair fails next month. The honest answer was: we come back and fix it. So we wrote it down.
