GE Fridge Repair

Not cooling — fridge warm, freezer fine

GE side-by-side and French-door models frequently develop evaporator fan motor failures. The fan sits in the freezer section and circulates cold air into the fresh food compartment — when it stops, the freezer holds temperature while the fridge warms gradually over 24–48 hours.

Try first: Open the freezer and press the door switch manually. If the evaporator fan doesn't run, it has failed. Also check that nothing is blocking the vents between the freezer and fridge sections.

Water pooling inside or on the floor

GE refrigerators — particularly Profile and Cafe series — are prone to blocked defrost drains. The drain tube from the evaporator coils ices over when the defrost heater weakens, causing melt water to overflow forward under the crisper drawers or onto the kitchen floor.

Try first: Flush the drain hole at the back of the freezer with warm water. If it clears but ices up again within days, the defrost heater or thermostat has failed and needs replacing.

Ice maker not producing or leaking

GE Profile and Cafe side-by-side models are well known for ice maker issues — particularly the water inlet valve failing after 4–5 years. Leaking ice makers on GE models usually point to a valve that doesn't fully close after a fill cycle, dripping water into the ice bin continuously.

Try first: Press the ice maker reset button (usually on the underside of the ice maker unit). If no ice appears within 24 hours, check whether you can hear water filling — if silent, the inlet valve has failed.

Error codes: CC, FF, PF

CC on GE refrigerators indicates a control board communication fault between the main board and the dispenser or ice maker module. FF means the freezer fan has failed. PF is a power failure code that can cause settings to reset and the unit to enter a demo-like state.

Try first: For PF, unplug for 30 seconds and restore power — this clears the power failure flag. For CC or FF, unplug for 5 minutes. If the code returns, the indicated component has failed and needs replacing.

GE Fridge Repair

A client's GE Profile French-door fridge was warm in the fresh food section while the freezer remained cold. They'd unplugged and restarted — the fridge cooled briefly, then warmed again within 12 hours.

Diagnosis & fix

Evaporator fan motor replaced

The evaporator fan motor had seized — a common failure in GE Profile French-door models at 4–6 years. Without airflow, the freezer held temperature on residual cold while the fridge warmed. Fan replaced, system defrosted manually, fridge back to temperature within 3 hours. 90-day warranty applied.

GE Washer Repair

Washer won't agitate or spin

GE top-load washers — particularly older models — use a transmission and agitator dogs that wear out over time. When the agitator dogs fail, the machine fills and agitates weakly or not at all. On GE front-loaders, a worn drive belt or failed motor control board is the usual cause of no-spin.

Try first: On top-loaders, try a spin-only cycle. If the drum doesn't spin at all, the lid switch or motor coupling may have failed. If it agitates weakly, the agitator dogs are likely worn.

E:23 or E:24 — drain fault

E:23 on GE front-load washers means the drain pump has failed; E:24 means the drain pump relay on the control board has failed. GE washers are less prone to filter clogs than some brands, so when a drain error appears, it's more often the pump or board than a blockage.

Try first: Check the drain hose at the back for kinks. Run a drain-only cycle and listen — if you hear the pump hum but no water moves, the impeller has failed. If the pump is completely silent, the board relay has likely failed.

Leaking from the door or tub seal

GE front-load washers can develop door boot gasket tears over time. On GE top-loaders, leaks more commonly come from a failing tub seal around the agitator shaft — water appears on the floor during the agitation phase rather than during fill or drain.

Try first: Watch the machine through a full cycle to identify when the leak appears. Leaking during agitation on a top-loader points to the tub seal. Leaking during wash on a front-loader is almost always the door boot gasket.

Loud banging or vibration during spin

GE top-load washers with the tub balanced by suspension springs can develop weakened springs that allow the tub to bang against the cabinet at high spin speeds. On GE front-loaders, worn shock absorbers produce a rhythmic thud during the spin cycle that worsens as the absorbers compress further.

Try first: Run a spin-only cycle with a small balanced load. If the banging appears only at high speed, the suspension springs or shock absorbers are worn. Continued use risks damaging the tub and cabinet.

GE Washer Repair

A client's GE top-load washer was filling and agitating normally but not spinning at the end of the cycle — clothes were left soaking wet. The machine showed no error codes and the lid switch clicked when pressed.

GE Dryer Repair

No heat — clothes still damp after a full cycle

GE electric dryers most commonly lose heat due to a failed heating element or a blown thermal fuse. GE gas dryers lose heat when the igniter fails — the drum spins and the motor runs, but the gas never lights. Both produce the same symptom: a full cycle with no heat and damp clothes.

Try first: Check the external vent for blockages first. On gas models, listen for the igniter clicking at the start of a cycle — if silent, the igniter has failed. On electric models, a clogged vent is the most common cause of thermal fuse failure.

E1 or E3 error — thermistor fault

E1 on GE dryers means the thermistor is open (broken circuit); E3 means it's shorted. The thermistor monitors drum temperature and signals the control board to cycle the heat on and off. When it fails, the dryer either runs too hot, shuts off early, or shows the error and locks out.

Try first: Unplug for 10 minutes and restart. If E1 or E3 returns, the thermistor needs replacement — it's a low-cost part that's straightforward to replace on most GE dryer models.

Squealing or thumping noise during the cycle

GE dryers use drum support rollers at the rear and a glide ring at the front. When the rear rollers wear flat, the drum develops a rhythmic thump. A worn or glazed drum glide ring produces a higher-pitched squeal. Both are common after 5–7 years of regular use.

Try first: Run the dryer empty on a timed heat cycle. Squealing empty means the rollers or glide ring. If quiet empty but noisy with a load, the issue is items inside — like buckles or zippers hitting the drum.

Dryer shuts off too early

GE sensor dry cycles use moisture sensor bars inside the drum that get coated with dryer sheet residue over time. Once coated, the bars read the laundry as dry earlier than it actually is. This is particularly common on GE models used daily with fabric softener sheets.

Try first: Locate the two thin metal strips inside the drum and wipe them with rubbing alcohol on a cloth. If early shutoff continues after cleaning, the thermistor or control board needs diagnosis.

GE Dishwasher Repair

Not draining — standing water after a cycle

GE dishwashers use a self-cleaning filter on some models and a manual filter on others. On models with a manual filter, standing water after a cycle is almost always a clogged filter. On self-cleaning models, standing water usually means the drain pump has failed.

Try first: Check your model's filter type — if manual, remove and rinse it. If your GE dishwasher has no visible filter to remove, it's self-cleaning and standing water means the drain pump needs diagnosis.

Dishes not clean or spotty

GE dishwashers with the Piranha hard food disposer can develop issues where the disposer slows down and food particles recirculate onto dishes. Spray arm nozzle clogs from hard water mineral deposits reduce wash coverage, particularly on the upper rack.

Try first: Remove and rinse the spray arms, clearing each nozzle with a toothpick. Run a cleaning cycle with a dishwasher descaler. If dishes are still dirty after cleaning, the circulation pump or disposer motor needs diagnosis.

Leaking from the door or bottom

GE dishwasher door gaskets can harden and pull away from the tub frame over time. The door latch can also wear, allowing the door to flex slightly during high-pressure wash cycles and let water past the seal. Leaks from underneath usually point to the pump seal or water inlet valve connection.

Try first: Run the dishwasher and observe where the water appears. Leaking from the door during the wash phase is almost always the gasket. Leaking from the bottom during fill usually points to the water inlet valve fitting.

Dishwasher stops mid-cycle or won't complete

GE dishwashers can stop mid-cycle due to a faulty door latch that loses contact during vibration, a failing water inlet valve that restricts fill, or a control board fault. Older GE models with mechanical timers can also stop when the timer motor fails part-way through a cycle.

Try first: Open and firmly re-latch the door, then press Start. If the cycle resumes, the door latch is the issue. If the machine stops consistently at the same point in the cycle, the timer or control board needs diagnosis.

GE Dishwasher Repair

A client's GE Profile dishwasher was leaving an inch of standing water in the tub after every cycle. The machine had no visible filter to clean — it was a self-cleaning filter model. No error codes were displayed.

Diagnosis & fix

Drain pump replaced

GE Stove & Range Repair

Burner won't ignite — no spark or weak spark

GE gas ranges use sealed burners with electronic igniters. The igniter electrode and burner cap ports are particularly prone to grease buildup on GE models — the cap design traps debris around the electrode. A cap sitting even slightly off-centre will prevent ignition entirely.

Try first: Remove the burner cap and clean around the igniter with a dry toothbrush. Rinse the cap and ports with warm water, dry completely, and reseat. If the burner still won't spark after a full dry-out, the igniter module needs replacing.

Glass cooktop element not heating

GE Cafe and Profile smooth-top ranges use radiant elements beneath the glass surface. A failed element produces no heat in that zone while the rest of the cooktop works normally. The infinite switch controlling the element can also fail — both produce the same symptom of a dead zone.

Try first: Test all other zones to confirm only one is affected. If the dead zone is controlled by its own dedicated switch knob, the infinite switch for that zone is the most likely fault before the element itself.

F2 or F3 error — oven temp fault on range

F2 on GE ranges means the oven temperature has exceeded the maximum safe limit — usually caused by a failed temperature sensor sending a runaway reading. F3 means the sensor circuit is open. Both lock out the oven until the fault is resolved.

Try first: Unplug for 30 minutes and restart. F3 almost always requires sensor replacement. F2 that returns immediately after reset means the sensor is actively sending an incorrect signal and needs replacing.

Continuous clicking when all burners are off

Continuous igniter clicking on GE gas ranges almost always means moisture in the igniter assembly from a boil-over or cleaning with excess water. GE's spark module design distributes spark current across all igniters simultaneously — one wet electrode can cause all burners to click.

Try first: Remove all burner caps and grates and let the stovetop dry completely — several hours minimum. Dry around each igniter with a hair dryer on a low setting. If clicking continues after full dry-out, the spark module needs replacing.

GE Oven Repair

Oven not reaching temperature

GE electric wall ovens and ranges most commonly lose heat due to a failed bake element. GE Profile and Cafe double ovens have two independent elements — when one fails, only that oven cavity is affected. A failing oven temperature sensor also causes the oven to stop heating before reaching the set temperature.

Try first: Set the oven to bake and look through the window after 10 minutes. If the bottom element is dark while the broil element glows, the bake element has burned through. Place an oven thermometer inside to check for temperature drift.

Uneven baking — hot spots or undercooked results

GE convection ovens can develop uneven heat distribution when the convection fan motor fails or slows — one area of the oven gets more airflow than others. A drifted temperature sensor also causes uneven results: the oven reads the correct temperature at the sensor location but the overall cavity temperature is off.

Try first: Use an oven thermometer at different rack positions to map the heat distribution. If one area is consistently hotter, the convection fan motor is likely failing. If all areas are equally off, the sensor needs calibrating or replacing.

F2 error or control panel not responding

F2 on GE ovens is a temperature runaway error that locks out the oven for safety. A non-responsive control panel on GE models — particularly GE Profile — often points to a failed touchpad membrane rather than the main control board behind it.

Try first: For F2, unplug for 30 minutes and restart. If F2 returns immediately, the sensor has failed. For a non-responsive panel, press each button firmly — if some respond and others don't, the membrane switch is delaminating and needs replacing.

Door not sealing — heat escaping

GE oven door gaskets are clipped into channels around the oven cavity opening. Over time — and especially after self-clean cycles — the gasket hardens and pulls away. Heat escaping around the door increases cooking times and causes the oven to cycle more frequently.

Try first: Run your hand slowly around the door edge while the oven is at temperature. If you feel heat escaping at any point, the gasket needs replacing. Door hinge tension can also be adjusted if the door doesn't sit flush.
