Maytag Fridge Repair

Not cooling — fridge warm, freezer fine

Maytag side-by-side and French-door models are built for durability, but the evaporator fan motor is a common failure point after 5–8 years. When the fan stops, cold air from the freezer can no longer circulate into the fresh food section — the freezer holds temperature while the fridge gradually warms over 24–48 hours.

Try first: Open the freezer and press the door switch manually. If the evaporator fan is silent, it has failed. Also check that the vents between the freezer and fridge sections aren't blocked by food items.

Water pooling inside or on the floor

Maytag refrigerators with bottom-freezer and French-door configurations can develop blocked defrost drains over time. The drain tube ices over when the defrost heater weakens, causing melt water to overflow forward under the crisper drawers or puddle on the kitchen floor.

Try first: Flush the drain hole at the back of the freezer compartment with warm water. If it drains freely but ices again within days, the defrost heater or thermostat has weakened and needs replacing.

Ice maker not producing or jamming

Maytag ice makers — particularly in side-by-side and French-door models — can develop jams where ice cubes freeze together into a solid mass in the bin. This is often caused by infrequent ice use allowing cubes to melt and refreeze. The water inlet valve can also fail after 5+ years, stopping ice production entirely.

Try first: Remove the ice bin and break up any clumped ice. Press the ice maker test button to confirm the mechanism cycles. If no water fills within 10 minutes of the test cycle, the inlet valve has failed.

Error codes: SY EF, PO, CF

SY EF on Maytag refrigerators means the evaporator fan has failed — a confirmed component fault. PO indicates a power outage has reset the unit settings. CF means the main control board has lost communication with a secondary module. PO clears on its own; SY EF and CF require the relevant component to be replaced.

Try first: For PO, unplug for 60 seconds and restore power. For SY EF or CF, unplug for 5 minutes — if the same code returns on the next cycle, the indicated component has failed.

Maytag Fridge Repair

F9 E1 error — not draining

F9 E1 on Maytag front-load washers means the machine didn't drain within the expected time. The F9 E1 code on Maytag front-loaders consistently points to the drain pump filter or a failed pump impeller.

Try first: Access the filter at the bottom front of the machine, lay a towel down, and unscrew the cap slowly to release water. Clear all debris and run a drain-spin cycle. If F9 E1 returns, the pump impeller has failed.

Leaking from the door

Maytag front-load washers — including Maxima models — develop door boot gasket tears over time. The inner fold of the gasket traps moisture between cycles and mould grows where rubber meets metal. Water appears on the floor during the wash or rinse phase, not at the end of the spin.

Try first: Pull the gasket back and check the inner fold for tears, holes or mould damage. Wipe the gasket completely dry after every wash. A torn or moulded-through gasket needs replacement — mould cannot be cleaned out of rubber that has already degraded.

Loud banging or walking during spin

Maytag top-load washers — particularly the Bravos series — can develop worn suspension springs that allow the tub to bang hard against the cabinet during high-speed spin. The machine may physically move across the floor. Maytag front-loaders develop worn shock absorbers that produce a rhythmic thud at spin speeds above 800 RPM.

Try first: Level all four feet and try a spin cycle with a small balanced load. If the machine still bangs on a small load, the suspension springs or shock absorbers need replacing — this won't resolve itself.

Maytag Dryer Repair

No heat — clothes still damp after a full cycle

Maytag electric dryers lose heat most commonly from a blown thermal fuse — caused by a clogged exhaust vent rather than a fault in the dryer itself. Gas Maytag dryers lose heat when the gas igniter weakens and can no longer light the burner.

Try first: Check the external vent for blockages before replacing parts. On gas models, listen for the igniter clicking at the start of a heat cycle — silence means the igniter has failed. Clear any vent blockage before fitting a new thermal fuse.

F:26 or F:28 error — motor or sensor fault

F:26 on Maytag dryers indicates a motor control board failure; F:28 means the moisture sensor circuit is open. Maytag Bravos and Maxima models use this error code system consistently. F:28 is more common and often caused by moisture sensor bar coating rather than a wiring fault.

Try first: For F:28, clean the two moisture sensor bars inside the drum with rubbing alcohol and restart. If F:28 returns after cleaning, the sensor wiring or control board needs diagnosis. F:26 almost always requires motor control board replacement.

Squealing or thumping during the cycle

Maytag dryers are built heavier than most, which means drum rollers and the front glide ring take more load over time. When the rear rollers flatten, the drum develops a rhythmic thump. A worn or cracked front glide ring produces a higher-pitched squeal that worsens as the drum heats up during a cycle.

Try first: Run the dryer completely empty on a timed heat cycle. Squealing or thumping that persists empty means the rollers or glide ring are worn. Catching this early avoids belt slippage and drum damage.

Dryer shuts off too early

Maytag sensor dry cycles use two moisture sensor bars inside the drum. Dryer sheet residue coats the bars over time and causes them to read "dry" before the load actually is. This is a very common complaint on Maytag Bravos and Maxima models used daily with fabric softener sheets.

Try first: Find the two metal bars inside the drum near the lint screen and wipe them with rubbing alcohol on a cloth. Clean them monthly if you use dryer sheets. If early shutoff continues after cleaning, the thermistor or control board needs diagnosis.

Try first: Remove the bottom rack, unscrew the cylindrical filter assembly at the base of the tub, and rinse all components under warm running water with a soft brush. Clean the filter every 2–4 weeks to prevent standing water recurring.

Dishes not clean or gritty after a cycle

Maytag dishwashers with the PowerBlast cycle and adjustable upper rack use multiple spray zones. Hard water mineral deposits clog the spray arm nozzles over time, reducing wash coverage — particularly on the upper rack. A failing circulation pump also produces weak spray pressure that leaves food residue on dishes.

Try first: Remove both spray arms (they twist off counterclockwise) and clear each nozzle with a toothpick. Run a cleaning cycle with descaler. If dishes are still gritty after cleaning all spray arms and the filter, the circulation pump needs diagnosis.

Leaking from the door

Maytag dishwasher door gaskets harden and crack over time — leaks typically start at the bottom corners of the door frame where the seal compresses most. A door latch that has loosened can also cause the door to flex slightly during the high-pressure wash cycle, allowing water past an otherwise intact gasket.

Try first: Run a short cycle and watch the bottom door corners. Leaking at the corners means gasket replacement. If the door feels slightly loose when closed, check the latch — a worn latch lets the door flex enough to break the seal during wash.

Dishwasher stops mid-cycle or won't complete

Maytag dishwashers can stop mid-cycle due to a faulty door latch losing contact during vibration, a water inlet valve that under-fills the tub, or a control board fault. Unlike some brands, Maytag models don't always display an error code when stopping mid-cycle — the machine simply goes silent.

Try first: Open and firmly re-latch the door, then press Start. If the cycle resumes, the door latch is the issue. If the machine stops consistently at the same point in the cycle with a full tub, the control board or timer needs diagnosis.

Try first: Remove the burner cap and grate, clean around the igniter with a dry toothbrush, and reseat the cap firmly. If the burner still won't spark after a full dry-out, the igniter electrode or spark module needs replacing.

Glass cooktop element not heating

Maytag smooth-top electric ranges use radiant elements beneath the glass surface. When an element fails, that zone produces no heat while others work normally. The infinite switch — which controls power to each element — can also fail independently, producing the same dead-zone symptom without any visible damage to the element itself.

Try first: Test a different zone to confirm the fault is isolated to one burner. If only one zone is dead, it's the element or its infinite switch. If multiple zones fail at once, the main control board needs diagnosis.

F2 E0 or F9 E0 error — temperature or door lock fault

F2 E0 on Maytag ranges means the oven is detecting a runaway temperature — almost always a failed oven temperature sensor sending an incorrect signal to the board rather than a true overheating event. F9 E0 means the door lock mechanism has failed, commonly after a self-clean cycle.

Try first: Unplug for 30 minutes to fully reset the board. If F2 E0 returns on the next use, the oven temperature sensor needs replacing. For F9 E0 after self-clean, allow the oven to cool completely — if the door remains locked, do not force it open.

Continuous clicking when all burners are off

Continuous igniter clicking on Maytag gas ranges almost always means moisture in the igniter assembly from a boil-over or excess water during cleaning. The spark module fires all igniters simultaneously on most Maytag models — one wet electrode can trigger clicking across all four burners at once.

Try first: Remove all burner caps and grates and allow the stovetop to dry completely for several hours. Use a hair dryer on a low setting to dry around each igniter. If clicking continues after full dry-out, the spark module needs replacing.

Maytag Oven Repair

Oven not reaching temperature

Maytag electric ovens most commonly fail at the bake element — Maytag's heavy-duty build means these are genuine wear-out failures rather than early failures. When the element burns through, the oven may still appear to function (the broil element still works) but won't reach the set bake temperature.

Try first: Set the oven to bake at 350°F and observe through the window after 10 minutes. If the lower element is dark while the upper one glows, the bake element has failed. Place an oven thermometer inside to confirm the temperature shortfall.

Uneven baking — hot spots or underdone results

Maytag convection ovens can develop uneven heat distribution when the convection fan motor slows or fails — certain rack positions become significantly hotter than others. A drifted temperature sensor causes an overall temperature offset rather than specific hot spots, and both can occur together on older models.

Try first: Place an oven thermometer at centre rack and compare to the display after 20 minutes at 350°F. A consistent 25°F+ offset points to the sensor. If temperature is accurate but distribution is uneven, the convection fan motor is failing.

F3 E0 or F3 E2 — sensor fault

F3 E0 on Maytag ovens means the oven temperature sensor has failed open; F3 E2 means the broil sensor is open. These are among the most common Maytag oven error codes and almost always require sensor replacement rather than control board work. The sensor is accessible from inside the oven cavity.

Try first: Unplug for 5 minutes and restart. If F3 E0 or F3 E2 returns immediately, the sensor has failed. It's a straightforward replacement on most Maytag oven models.

Door not sealing — heat escaping

Maytag oven door gaskets are clip-mounted around the cavity opening and harden over time — particularly after self-clean cycles. Heat escaping around the door causes longer preheat times and uneven baking.

Try first: Run your hand slowly around the door edge while the oven is at temperature. If you feel heat escaping at any point, the gasket needs replacing. Door hinge tension can also be adjusted if the door doesn't sit flush.
