Whirlpool Fridge Repair

Not cooling — fridge warm, freezer fine

Whirlpool side-by-side and French-door models frequently develop evaporator fan motor failures. The fan circulates cold air from the freezer into the fresh food section — when it stops, the freezer stays cold while the fridge gradually warms over 24–48 hours. A common failure on Whirlpool models 4–7 years old.

Try first: Open the freezer and press the door switch manually — if the evaporator fan doesn't run, it has failed. Also ensure nothing is blocking the vents between the freezer and fridge sections.

Water pooling inside or on the floor

Whirlpool refrigerators are prone to clogged defrost drain tubes — particularly on French-door and bottom-freezer models. The drain tube runs from the evaporator coils to the drip pan below and freezes over when the defrost heater weakens, pushing melt water into the fresh food section.

Try first: Flush the drain hole at the back of the freezer with warm water. If it clears but ices up again within days, the defrost heater or thermostat has failed.

Ice maker not producing or overfilling

Whirlpool ice makers — particularly in French-door and side-by-side models — commonly fail at the water inlet valve or the ice maker module. Overfilling is a specific Whirlpool issue where the inlet valve doesn't close fully after a fill cycle, causing the ice bin to overflow with water or produce clumped ice.

Try first: Press the test button on the underside of the ice maker. If you hear it cycle but no water fills, the inlet valve has failed. If the bin is flooding, the inlet valve is not closing properly and needs replacing.

Error codes: CF, PO, SY EF

CF on Whirlpool fridges means a control board communication failure; PO indicates a power outage has reset the unit; SY EF means the evaporator fan has failed. All three can appear after a power surge or brownout — PO clears on its own, while CF and SY EF indicate actual component failures.

Try first: For PO, unplug for 60 seconds and restore power. If CF or SY EF returns, these are confirmed failures — the relevant board or fan motor needs replacing.

Whirlpool Fridge Repair

Try first: Open and firmly close the door, then press Start. If F5 E2 clears temporarily but returns, the door latch assembly has failed mechanically and needs replacing — resetting won't fix a worn latch.

F9 E1 error — drain fault

F9 E1 on Whirlpool washers means the machine failed to drain within the expected time. The drain pump filter on Whirlpool front-loaders clogs regularly with lint, coins and small items. F9 E1 is the most commonly reported Whirlpool error code and the fix is usually the filter rather than the pump.

Try first: Access the filter at the bottom front panel, lay a towel down, and unscrew the cap slowly to release the water. Clear all debris and run a drain-spin cycle. If F9 E1 returns after cleaning, the drain pump impeller has failed.

Leaking from the door

Whirlpool Duet front-load washers develop door boot gasket tears — particularly on the inner fold that stays wet between cycles. Mould buildup accelerates the deterioration. Water appears on the floor during the wash or rinse phase rather than at the end of the cycle.

Try first: Pull the gasket back and inspect the inner fold carefully for tears, holes or sections that have pulled away. Wipe the gasket dry after every wash to slow deterioration. A torn gasket needs full replacement.

Excessive vibration or loud banging during spin

Whirlpool Cabrio and top-load washers with the suspension spring system can develop weakened springs that allow the tub to bang hard against the cabinet during high-speed spin. On Duet front-loaders, worn shock absorbers produce a heavy thudding at spin speeds above 800 RPM.

Try first: Level all four feet and run a spin cycle with a small balanced load. If banging appears at high speed regardless of load size, the suspension springs or shock absorbers are worn and need replacing.

Whirlpool Dryer Repair

No heat — clothes still damp after a full cycle

Whirlpool electric dryers most commonly lose heat due to a blown thermal fuse or failed heating element. Whirlpool gas dryers lose heat when the gas igniter fails — the drum spins normally but the burner never fires. The thermal fuse on Whirlpool models is a one-time device that must be replaced, not reset.

Try first: Check the external vent for blockages before replacing any parts. A clogged vent causes the thermal fuse to blow — replace the fuse without clearing the vent and it will fail again within weeks.

F:26 or F:28 error — motor or moisture sensor fault

F:26 on Whirlpool dryers indicates the motor control board has failed; F:28 means the moisture sensor circuit is open. Whirlpool Cabrio and Duet dryer models are particularly prone to moisture sensor issues after heavy use — the sensor bars coat with residue and the board receives no signal.

Try first: For F:28, clean the moisture sensor bars inside the drum with rubbing alcohol and restart. If F:28 returns after cleaning, the sensor wiring or board needs diagnosis. F:26 almost always requires motor control board replacement.

Squealing or thumping during the cycle

Whirlpool dryers use drum support rollers at the rear and a front drum bearing or glide ring. When the rollers wear flat, the drum develops a rhythmic thump that gets louder over time. The drive belt on Whirlpool models can also fray and slip before breaking, producing an intermittent squeal during spin.

Try first: Run the dryer empty on a timed heat cycle. If it squeals or thumps without a load, the rollers or belt are worn. Catching this early avoids belt breakage and drum damage.

Dryer shuts off too early on sensor dry

Whirlpool Cabrio and Duet dryers use moisture sensor bars that coat with dryer sheet residue over time. Once coated, the bars read "dry" before the load actually is, ending the cycle early. This is one of the most common complaints on Whirlpool sensor-dry models.

Try first: Locate the two metal sensor bars inside the drum and wipe them with rubbing alcohol. Clean them every month if you use dryer sheets. If early shutoff continues after cleaning, the thermistor or control board needs diagnosis.

Whirlpool dishwashers use a manual filter that needs to be cleaned regularly. Standing water after a cycle is almost always a clogged filter on Whirlpool models — one of the most common service calls. The filter sits at the base of the tub and traps food debris, grease and hard water deposits.

Try first: Remove the bottom rack, unscrew the cylindrical filter, and rinse all components under warm water. Use a soft brush to clear the mesh. Clean the filter every 2–4 weeks to prevent standing water from becoming a regular issue.

Dishes not clean or spotted

Whirlpool dishwashers with the Third Level Rack spray arm system can develop clogs in the upper spray arm or the third-level rack nozzles — when these clog, top items and cutlery don't get properly cleaned. Hard water mineral buildup is the most common cause in Halifax and Dartmouth.

Try first: Remove and rinse all spray arms, clearing each nozzle with a toothpick. Run a cleaning cycle with a dishwasher descaler. If dishes are still dirty after cleaning all spray arms and the filter, the circulation pump pressure has dropped.

Leaking from the door or underneath

Whirlpool dishwasher door gaskets can harden and crack over time — leaks typically appear at the bottom corners first. A failing water inlet valve can also drip during fill, with water appearing under the machine rather than from the door. Both are common on Whirlpool models after 5–7 years.

Try first: Observe during a wash cycle to identify where the leak originates. Bottom-corner door leaks almost always mean gasket replacement. Leaks from underneath during the fill phase point to the water inlet valve fitting or hose connection.

Dishwasher stops mid-cycle or won't latch

Whirlpool dishwasher door latches wear over time and lose the spring tension needed to hold the door firmly closed during high-pressure wash cycles. When the latch loses contact mid-cycle, the machine stops as a safety measure. A worn latch also causes the door to feel loose when closed.

Try first: Push the door firmly until you hear a solid click before pressing Start. If the machine stops mid-cycle, open and re-latch the door firmly. If this is a recurring issue, the door latch assembly needs replacing.

Try first: Remove the burner cap and clean thoroughly around the igniter with a dry toothbrush. Rinse the cap ports with warm water, dry completely, and reseat firmly. If the burner still won't spark after full drying, the igniter or spark module needs replacing.

Glass cooktop element not heating

Whirlpool smooth-top electric ranges use radiant elements beneath the glass surface. A failed element produces a completely dead zone with no heat. The infinite switch that controls each element can also fail independently — both produce the same dead-zone symptom on that burner.

Try first: Test the same pan on a working burner to confirm the issue is the cooktop. If one zone is dead while others work normally, it's the element or its infinite switch — not the main control board.

F2 E0 or F9 E0 error — temperature or lockout fault

F2 E0 on Whirlpool ranges means the oven is reading above the maximum safe temperature — usually a sensor failure rather than an actual overheating event. F9 E0 indicates the door lock mechanism has failed, commonly after a self-clean cycle where the latch motor overheats.

Try first: Unplug for 30 minutes. If F2 E0 returns on the next use, the oven temperature sensor needs replacing. F9 E0 sometimes clears after cooling — if the door remains locked, do not force it open as this damages the latch assembly.

Continuous clicking when all burners are off

Continuous igniter clicking on Whirlpool gas ranges means moisture has reached the spark module — from a boil-over or from cleaning with too much water. Whirlpool's spark module fires all igniters simultaneously, so one wet electrode can cause clicking across all four burners at once.

Try first: Remove all burner caps and grates and allow the stovetop to dry completely — several hours minimum. Use a hair dryer on low heat around each igniter to speed up drying. If clicking continues after full dry-out, the spark module needs replacing.

Whirlpool Oven Repair

Oven not reaching temperature

Whirlpool electric ovens most commonly fail at the bake element — the lower element that provides the majority of cooking heat. When it burns through, the oven may still appear to function (the broil element works) but won't reach the set temperature. A failing oven sensor also causes the oven to stop heating before reaching the target.

Try first: Set the oven to bake at 350°F and look through the window after 10 minutes. If the bottom element is dark while the top glows orange, the bake element has failed. Place an oven thermometer inside to check for temperature drift from a sensor issue.

Uneven baking — hot spots or underdone results

Whirlpool convection ovens can develop uneven baking when the convection fan motor slows or fails — the fan redistributes heat across the cavity, and without it certain areas become significantly hotter. A drifted temperature sensor produces an overall temperature offset rather than hot spots.

Try first: Use an oven thermometer at multiple rack positions. If the temperature is consistent but 25°F+ off the display, calibrate through the settings menu or replace the sensor. Uneven temperatures at different rack positions point to the convection fan motor.

F3 E0 or F3 E2 error — sensor fault

F3 E0 on Whirlpool ovens means the oven temperature sensor is open; F3 E2 means the broil sensor is open. Both are among the most common Whirlpool oven error codes and almost always require sensor replacement — the sensor itself rather than the control board.

Try first: Unplug for 5 minutes and restart. If F3 E0 or F3 E2 returns immediately, the sensor has failed. It's a straightforward replacement on most Whirlpool oven models and doesn't require board work.

Door not sealing — heat escaping

Whirlpool oven door gaskets are pressed into a channel around the oven cavity. Over time the gasket compresses and hardens — particularly after self-clean cycles. Heat escaping around the door causes longer preheat times and uneven baking.

Try first: Run your hand slowly around the door edge while the oven is at temperature. If you feel heat escaping at any point, the gasket needs replacing. Door hinge tension can also be adjusted if the door doesn't sit flush.
